Man charged in Newberry hate crime found

William Dennis Bracewell

NEWBERRY – William Dennis Bracewell, 37, of Trenton, was arrested by Alachua County Sheriff deputies for his alleged involvement in a downtown Newberry hate crime.

Bracewell was arrested at his construction job in Gainesville and charged with aggravated battery that caused great bodily harm or disability, as well as a hate crime charge, for a Sept. 3 incident at Westend Package Bar in Newberry.

Deputies responded to the parking lot of the bar late that night to find a 31-year-old Gainesville man badly beaten. Witnesses told police that the man was beaten while being called gay, according to police.

The victim was punched in the face and had a beer bottle broken on his head while being called derogatory names related to being a homosexual, according to the police report. The victim continued to be kicked even after he had fallen down and was unresponsive, police stated.

The victim was taken to the hospital where he was treated for serious injuries that required stitches.

The attack was unprovoked, according to police.

Bracewell has posted bond of $50,000 and is out of jail, said Art Forgey, Alachua County public information officer.

Forgey said that hate crimes charges are not common in the county.

“There are very, very few,” he said. “They are rare and far between.”
