Time Capsule: A peek inside The Herald at life in the past

5 years ago:

• Wal-Mart begins its first inquiries into placing a Wal-Mart Supercenter in the city of Alachua.

• John Glanzer is elected as the new mayor of Newberry.

• The Deer Stand, a downtown Alachua business since 1993, grows to such a point that the owners decide to move the business to a large location on U.S. 441.

• Former Santa Fe Raider football player Marcus Jones is a starting football player for Louisville in a nationally televised game against Miami.

10 years ago:

• Mandy Suggs and Lem Simmons are selected as Newberry High School’s Homecoming Queen and King.

• Santa Fe High School driver education teacher Alfred C. Peoples is named the 1999 Educator of the Year for Driver/Traffic Safety.

50 years ago:

• High Springs closes a portion of Northwest Second Street between Fifth Avenue and U.S. 441 at the request of Cecil Kahlich, who says he may build a supermarket there.

• Ralph Longman is pictured with Ford’s newest car, a Falcon.

• Teens write a letter to the editor, saying there is no recreation in High Springs.
