High Springs City Commission Candidate: Jim Gabriel

I have had the honor of being your commissioner for the past nine years. My wife Tara and I live on Main Street with our children, Jack, 11, and Kate, 9. Our kids go to school here, and our family goes to church here in High Springs.

I own and operate the Bike Shop that I opened over 16 years ago. I am always accessible to you and am intimately aware of the issues facing our families and local businesses.

My record of service to this community is arguably unsurpassed by any other candidate. It began long before my nine years as commissioner and extends outside my role as commissioner.

Just some examples in the past 17 years: president of the Youth Center, founding member of the Community Theatre, chairman of the Visioning Committee, founded H.S. BMX, 10-year member and current president of H.S. Rotary.

As commissioner, I have worked toward increasing opportunities for citizen involvement and have spearheaded visioning efforts to assist in the formation of policies that protect our quality of life.

We have been successful in improving services, invested in aging infrastructure and remained fiscally responsible. Our downtown has never looked better!

Our city is a safer place to live due to improvements to our police and fire departments. The level of service and professionalism has never been higher.

We have repaired or replaced substandard homes for many of our neighbors unable to afford it and cleaned up dilapidated properties. We created a street paving plan and began to streamline city processes.

Financially, our city is strong. The fact is we received a perfect audit this year and in the past five years nearly doubled our cash reserves. Increased levels of services and growing cash reserves was accomplished without the need to raise the city tax rate.

Increased efficiency, aggressively seeking creative partnerships and identifying grant opportunities have proved effective.

No one agrees on everything, all the time. I have always tried to make decisions based on the law, the facts and what is in the best longterm interest of all residents.

In having missed only two City Commission meetings in nine years, I am always prepared and have represented your interest at county and state levels.

Now is not the time for "on the job training," and moving backward is not an option.

I have the experience, knowledge and proven record for moving forward.
