High Springs City Commission Candidate: Mike Kearney

Only a few days are left before the city election. What more is there to say? The candidates’ positions have been printed in The North Florida Herald and in Alachua County Today, and we were all invited to the Woman's Club forum.

The positions of the Commission candidates seem pretty clear to me. Four are for keeping great city services under the present city manager and watching the city budget very closely as we move CAREFULLY through this coming year.

Yes, they want to keep the city services, at a minimum, at their present good, working status.

Two of the candidates want to have the Commission cut city taxes (by how much you can do this is questionable), lock down spending, especially of the city’s unrestricted reserve funds and want the Commission to be more controlling of your city government.

As a voter myself, that seems like a pretty simple choice to me!

If you do decide to elect me as a city commissioner, what will I do for you?

I will listen to what the voters say and really try to find out what they want.

I will make it a main point to see that our city codes are reviewed and brought up to date, while considering the many changes in our times and what the citizens want the city codes to reflect, as our little town moves into the future.

I will strive to see that U.S. 441, Santa Fe Blvd., is ready for upcoming business development, and we must work with the downtown landlords to see if we can bring business back to Main Street.

My primary duty as a City Commissioner will be to listen to you, the High Springs citizens and the many downtown business owners and employees, who, while they cannot vote in High Springs, do consider this their town.

We will get the city dirt roads paved, and we will get rid of the Pigg house!

Anything else you voters want? Just tell me. I will listen!

Bottom Line: Vote for me or for whomever you think is the right candidate but not because they may be a friend of yours or because they may belong to your church or because someone else told you they were best for our town.

Vote because you think they will be decisive and will strive to do the citizens’ bidding!
